PEDRO III "THE GREAT ONE "

Hijo of Jaime I. Heredero de Aragón, Valencia and Catalonia. His brother Jaime received Majorca, Rosellón, Cerdagne Valley and Montpellier. Married (1262) with Constanza de Suabia, daughter of Manfredo of Sicily, encouraged the " Sicilianas Eves " against Carlos I of Anjou (1282) and conquered Sicily. These personal decisions and their alliances with France, Castilla and England, and the taking of Malta, Gozzo and Gelves, gave to the king of Aragón paper of great Mediterranean gentleman, but its crown was put in prohibition by the Pope, that grantedPedro III it tothe son of Felipe III of France.

Pedro III " the Great one " was in war with Felipe, uncle of Carlos de Anjou, who had " crossed " character of papal against Aragón, to that won despite the treason of Jaime. From Cortes de Tarazona (1283) the " Aragonese Union " which it demanded of the king the acceptance of hard conditions, that was of signing, extending the concessions shortly after (1285) and subjecting, in Aragón arose, to the control of the local estates.
