フランスでは『ローランの歌』が1100年頃フランスで成立した。騎士の武勲や恋愛をテーマにした騎士道物語が作られ、吟遊詩人（宮廷詩人）によって歌われた。その中でも『トリスタン物語』は悲恋物語として知られる。また、恋愛をテーマにした寓意的な『薔薇物語』は大きな影響を持った。一方、『結婚十五の歓び』は結婚の現実を描いたコント集。

中世の詩人としては、フランソワ・ヴィヨンが有名。

ドイツでも騎士道物語『ローランの歌』『トリスタン物語』が翻訳されて吟遊詩人に歌われた。『ニーベルンゲンの歌』なども騎士道物語として知られる。
