We got PCC ! |
History: During the fifties, Barcelona made some attempts to purchase new tramways but except for the short batch 1301-1310, that followed the 1200-class in 1955 and so named 'PCC style', no one other car came. So, when at the beginning of the '60 Washington put on sale its PCC cars due to the withdrawal of its tramway system, Barcelona asked for information.D.C. Transit System Inc. offered a first batch of 22 streetcars rated at 2000 US$ per unit. The two first cars arrived at the Barcelona harbour in september 1961. The overhaul was carried by MACOSA that made some changes, between them the removal of the plough used in that american city. First alocated at the 1500 serie, they were renumbered in the 1600 serie as some trailers were running yet as 1500 class. The first PCC made some trials from august 1962, but the Mayor Porcioles objected to the aesthetics of the car (he said that wheels must be covered and internal lighting seemed as toilets ones) so that some improvements were applied: full skirt, a front trolei for manoeuvring, two front highlights and trafficators as well changing of doors and lighting.

With the agreement of the Mayor, PCC's should be entered in service on 25 December 1962 but the heavy snowfall that happened that night with more than 50cm high prevented the use of the cars and they were launched on 3 January 1963 on route 65 along the Diagonal Ave. There they showed their more interesting features: acceleration, speed, silent and smooth ride.

Despite some bad comments by the press, anchored in the criticism of the tramways, the PCC were welcomed by the population. So that Tranvías de Barcelona bought a new batch of 45 PCC's, all postwar ones and, finally 33 more. Of the 101 PCC purchased, only 99 were in service and 2 for spare.
The new tramcars improved the Barcelona' tramways fleet and permitted the withdrawal of the service and the scrap of 40 and 50 years old tramways. In fact, that tramcars were the only american PCC cars in Spain. The PCC technology created some problems to the Tranvías de Barcelona workshops. Despite their good state, the PCC's passed away as well the remnant network on 18 March 1971. Some PCC were scrapped as early as 1968 and run only 3 years! During its life in Barcelona some received the removal of the wheels skirt ans minor changes following accidents.
