History: The 'Tranvía de Tarragona' company, was created in 1883 to put forward the project  to build a horse tramway to link the lower city and the harbour with the old town. The first project was launched in 1881,  and permits the knowledge of the route the type of the tramcars and other characteristics.  The line started at  carrer del Mar (Sea st.) and finished in the  Baixada de la Peixateria (Fish shop st),  along Apodaca, Unió,  Rambla Nova streets and pça. de la Font ( Fountain sq ), with a branch to Barcelona railway station,  about  2 km in all. A prolongation to the cathedral was projected but never realised.

The company was always in red numbers due to a shortage of patronage.  The branch to the station closed very soon.  In 1896 there were only 6 cars. No vehicle nor other parts of the system were kept, except the depot for the fire brigade and now demolished.
