codex hopiensis

In the red land of Arizona, the Hopi tribe (Hopituh Shinumu, "the peaceful people") still celebrates the ancien rites personifying the Katcinas, supernatural beings that make up a teeming charity pantheon. Its multicoloured catalogue "Codex hopiensis", painted at the beginning of the century by three Indian artists, at the behest of ethnologist Jesse Walter Fewkes, appears beside other more illustrious Aztec and Maya codices, in a ideal library of the beaten deities in America. The series was inspired by this codex and includes from 1991 to 1995.

codex austral

In ARCO 95 ( International Contemporary Art Fair, Madrid.) I discovered a work of the Australian artist Lindsay Bird Petyarre when I was preparing for one long stay in the USA. I found many similarities between the australian native art and my codex. In 1995, in the last moment, I changed the trip to Arizona by Australia and I began the Codex austral series. The series includes from 1995 to the present time.

codex mediterrani

From the beginning I used the term "codex " to title my paintings. The Romans named "codex" to the rigid square manuscripts differentiating them from the "volumen " or book in roll form. Thus he tried to communicate the idea of "book-painting" like vehicle of artistic expression. The project began in 1991 and tries to cross the way that goes from the primitive art to the contemporary art.
