Cor Maragall (Maragall Choir), that celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2004, was founded in 1979 by its actual conductor, Àngels Alabert. From that moment onwards it has never ceased giving concerts and participating in various national and international choir encounters/festivals. At present it consists of 40 singers whose average musical knowledge is of intermediate level. The choir is member of the Catalan Choir Federation (FCEC) and Europa Cantat.
Eversince its first concert
Cor Maragall has
always carefully looked after the quality of the concerts and has
therefore
given full dedication to studying new, varied repertories, giving
priority to
the propagation of music of its
beloved country, Catalonia. For this reason the choir has taken great
interest
in performing, as representative of their nation, in other European
countries:
Òccitania (Provence), Euskadi (Basque Country), Italy, Belgium,
Switzerland,
Germany, Norway, Denmark, Hungary, Austria and France. Because of the concern for
the propagation of
their music all over Europe and also the interest in getting to know
music
proceeding from other places, Cor Maragall became a member of the
association
Europa Cantat, the organizer of numerous festivals hold all over
Europe, in which
Cor Maragall has participated. The latter has, without any doubt,
contributed
remarkably to the improvement of the level of the choir. Also should be mentioned
the collaboration with
other choirs of Girona which has made it possible to perform important
works
like Mozart’s Requiem, Bach’s Magnificat or Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. Moreover, every year Cor
Maragall offers the
traditional concert of All Saints’ Day with a, for this occasion,
specially
prepared repertoire. About these concerts we would like to mention the
tribute
the choir paid to the works of composers from Girona, like Xavier
Montsalvatge
and the performance of ‘Mass for three choirs, organ and harpsichord’
composed
by J.Gas (Master of the Choir of the cathedral of Girona in the 19th
century) under the conductorship of Reinald Dedies and Àngels
Alabert,
together with the choir Sine Nomine from Perpinyà. Cor Maragall has performed
works of all times:
from Gregorian to Contemporary music. Worth mentioning are: ‘Llibre
vermell de
Montserrat’ (Red book of Montserrat); Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana (performed on the occasion of the 20th
anniversary of the choir); Benjamin Britten’s Rejoice in the
Lamb (cantata for
chorus, soloists and organ); the complete opera Dido and Eneas
(Purcell) performed
in Girona and Vilanova de Geltrú; Duke Ellington’s Sacred
Concert. Likewise, the choir has
also delt with works in
different languages: Basque, Occitan, English, French, Italian, German,
Portuguese, Czech, Hungarian and even Japanese. In 1999 the choir
celebrated its 20th
anniversary by participating in the International Festival of
Choir Singing in Paris-Ille de France, which was celebrated on the 7th
and 8th of January that year. Outstanding were the concerts
given at
the Arc de la Defense and at the headquarters of the Unesco in Paris. In 2004 Cor Maragall celebrated its 25th anniversary with the première of the Cant Espiritual (Spiritual Chant) by Joan Maragall, composed by the conductor of the choir, M. Àngels Alabert, in a version for orchestra and choir. For All Saints’ Day of 2005 the choir sang G. Fauré’s Requiem. |
