About our ninth number

This number has a special focus on the endogenous aspect of places to achieve development and environmental goals in a context of both positive and negative externalities caused by economic activities and interactions around the world. The first two contributions examine the economic development impact of devolution processes in two of the main players in the world economy, Brazil and China. Despite strong theoretical grounds in favour of devolution or decentralisation processes, both cases show that, in practice, many aspects specific to regions and localities have to be taken into account to increase the chances of success. The third article illustrates that pursuing local economic development from below could also work in lagging behind areas. Some key aspects of this approach can be identified in the experience of the western U.S.-Mexican border region. Finally, the fourth and fifth contributions refer to the complexity of the environmental challenges and dilemmas that a globalised economy imposes on specific territories. The case of the Patagonia in Argentina is an excellent example of the usefulness of bottom-up strategies towards sustainable development.
