City walls at Castile and León

Alarcón (New Castile).

Like the castle it has parts of different styles: arab, Middle Age and Renaisance.

* Astorga (León).

Roman wall (IV century). Behind it, you can see the Bishop's Palace, built by Gaudí (XIX century).

(Toledo) Atienza.

Triple wall wich surrounds the Town and castle of Atienza, both conquered by the castilians in 1085.

* Avila (Castile).

Built at XI century. They are the most famous walls at Spain. The city of Avila has been declared World Heritage Site.

* Béjar (León)." Puerta del Pico "

* Belmonte (New Castile).

Like the castle, they have been built by D. Juan Pacheco (first marquis of Villena) at XV century.

* El Burgo de Osma (Castile).

Built at XV century. Now, it is yet conserved one of their gates, the "Puerta de San Miguel" (image)

Ciudad Rodrigo (León).

Built by the king Fernando II of León, at XII century. Some rests of the Roman wall, are still present, and also some walls of XVII-XIX centuries. It was sieged at 1812 by the Duke of Wellington, who received also the title of "Duque de Ciudad Rodrigo" (see The Siege of Ciudad Rodrigo)

* Coca.

XII century walls: 200 meters of walls, and one of their gates ara conserved.

* Hita (New Castile)." Puerta de Santa Maria".

Built by the Marquis of Santillana (Don Iñigo López de Mendoza) at XV century.

* León city.

* Lerma (Castile)."Arco de la cárcel".

Mansilla de las Mulas (León).

XII-XIII centuries.

Miranda del Castañar (León). "Puerta de San Ginés".

Walls built in 1213, they present several modifications (the gate of the image dates from XVI century).

Rello (Castile).

One of the best conserved walls in the autonomous region of Castilla y León. Of unclear origin, they are supposed to date from XV century, but some authors date them in XIV or even XI century.

* Segovia (Castile).

Built at XI century by the king Alfonso VI, after the reconquest of the city. Segovia has been declared World Heritage Site.

* Sepúlveda (Castile). "Puerta de la Fuerza".

* Sigüenza(New Castile).

It has three diferent walls, built at different centuries.

* Toledo (capital of New Castile).

Walls of Arab origin, completed by the king Alfonso VI VI, after the reconquest of the city.

The city of Toledo has been declared World heritage Site.

* Urueña (Castile).

Built, like the castle, between XIII & XIV centuries. They are almost complete and well conserved.

* Zamora, "la bien cercada" (the well-locked) (León).
