THE NIGHT! WE SAID...
The night! we said, on a
certain night laid free
to Time’s declension, far
beyond death,
when cool black airs are
a flowering breath
of waters, voices, flames,
in a covered sea.
Neither for you nor me,
that night, unkindly
was hand or hearth; or
a cellar unstocked;
entire within Entirety,
we knew the exact
and royal road to the Proffered
Country.
In the immortal path, companions,
we were One,
in the indivisible breath,
in the wind on the threshing-floor,
and one word, the Word,
was the common tongue.
Enslaved by light, by expectation
freed,
besieged by Nobody, strong
at strength’s core,
one only flag sheltered
our need.
