The group S’Eixam was formed in April, 2000, by the joining of a group of friends who all have an interest in traditional
folklore, and come from various Mallorcan dance schools in Palma de Mallorca.
From our beginnings, the main aim of our Cultural Association is to maintain, promote and inform on our roots, via traditional
and folklore Mallorcan dances. We enjoy dancing to the sound of our Mallorcan music: ‘jotas’, ‘boleros’, ‘fandangos’, ‘mateixas’.
Our dances maintain the roots of the past; they are danced in couples, are spontaneous, and reflect the Mallorcan society of
the 18th and 19th century. S’Eixam maintains the role of the woman, who seduced, provoked and led the dance, whilst the man followed the steps marked by the woman at her wish.
Some dances are in-group, following one of the women who leads and improvises the dance. In this way, we achieve a livelier dance, similar to the dances originally carried out in squares, or upon
returning from the fields.
