LAGOS DE COVADONGA - 1134 m
Access. Santander - Llanes - Arriondas - Cangas de Onís
It's the most famous climb in the last decades. Their 13km are full of histories in the Vuelta these last 25 years. Since the beginning, through a nice forest, the gradient turns to a heavy 10%, one of the most critical sections in this mountain.
This is the start
When we 're close to the fifth km, which is slightly softer than before, we reach la Huesera, the most famous section in the climb. So famous that it has its own name. It's almost 1km with an average close to 15%..
We're doing the incredible Huesera
Then we start the second half. Something special, with lots of flat sections combined with others really steep, up to 10%. It's asfixiant, you start riding fast, and a hard section comes, and again fast...and then those wonderful lakes called Enol and Ercina, on the top.
The Mirador de la Reina, another nice place in the climb
The Huesera requires a 25, at least. It's really tough. If it wasn't there, a 23 should be enough. But believe, this climb is hard and you need to be fit and concentrated. It's not a long climb, and also crowded, both for the Sanctuary at the beginning and the lakes on the top.
