Side Mazzo

This is really one of the top-three toughest mountains in Italy. Surely the most famous sice Giro organizers thought in it for the parcours beginning 90s, becoming a myth. Just at the starting point in Mazzo, we see the road is really narrow, as every famous Italian mountain.

Before getting started, in the unforgettable Mazzo di Valtellina

Their 13km, are incredible, very hard, but with small sections to rest, not more than 15m, but enough at every U-turn to breathe and start another striaght zone. Since the beginning, we enter a forest zone, which will come with us almost the whole climb.

As I told you, the slope after every U-turn is horrible

First kilometers easily get to a dangerous 12%, but it's on the fourth and fifth that the average comes to an amazing 14-15%, so reaching a speed of 10km/h is not easy in fact.

Terrible scene at 18% / Pantani monument

The climb goes on, and the kilometers look more or less the same, the gradient always up to 10%...only the last km is a little bit easier. Then, the forest ends, and the gradient sets into a relaxing 8%, maybe the only part to go for a 39x23.

We're nearby the top, last km

The summit, which is a tribute to Marco Pantani, es a gift for the brave guys who come and climb it. I sincerely recommend it, more since this year, because the surface now is excellent.. But please, don't forget to come here without a 39x25 or 28. I got a 28 to climb relaxed...but with a 23 or setting a hard pace, you'll die. The downhill to Mazzo is very spectacular, but too dangerous. On the other hand, the road to Edolo is really very funny and the surface superb. So please, go there.

I was there, and you, when?
