RETTENBACHFERNER - 2803 m
Access. Innsbruck - Haiming - Oetz
One of the coldest days with the bike. It was announced to snow at 2000m, and we were arriving at 2800! So that was clear. Now, at Soelden, a climb towards a glacier that impressed us in the last Deutschland Tour. Departing at 1400m, almost 13km, and 1300m of height difference.
Not looking easy
Since the first slope, you notice it’ll be a wall at 12-13%. No flats, lots of U-turns, and the agony coming from nowhere. After 2km, the rain appears.
This looks better...from the sofa
In the first half I can’t remember any moment to relax. Only at km6, a short downhill just before the pay area, where I can see the enormous straight driving us to...the snow! There we go!!!
In the first slopes of the last part
Hot asphalt, low temperatures, the rain turning to vapour...it looks like a movie. The incredible straight at 13% never ends. It’s not easy to advance. At the end, we finish it, we’re 4km to the top, at 2400m, and now the rain turns to snow. And always, at 13%.
Fog, snow...me & Rafa
Last meters have a poor asphalt. We cross the ski station parking, and keep on riding for another kilometer until the roads ends. Frozen hands, we try to put our winter clothes on, but they are wet because of the rain! By fortune, God gives us a few minutes of sun to take pictures and enjoy they views, hidden by the fog during the climb. We’ll remember that day, for sure!
Last km in a frozen day
Regular mountain, not long but tough, moreover menthally, because of long straights. 39x27 is mandatory, and you’ll ride very slow anyway. The weather that day will keep in our heads forever more as one of the main challenges of 2007. I prefer the Oscheniksee, but this on is done.
